Why Michiana Driveways Fail
South Bend driveways fail differently than driveways in central Indiana. The city averages 69 inches of annual lake-effect snowfall from Lake Michigan - more than Chicago, more than Detroit, and more than any other Indiana city. That much snow means more freeze-thaw cycles, more meltwater, more road salt, and more winter stress sitting on the same slab from November through March.
The compounding concrete failure pattern comes from three directions. Lake-effect snow loads the surface with moisture. St Joseph County's 36-inch frost depth pushes cold deep enough to move the ground below the driveway. Clay-heavy glacial till soil drains poorly, holds water, and transfers every freeze cycle into the concrete from underneath. At the apron, Indiana DOT road salt accelerates surface scaling on concrete that was not poured with an air-entrained exterior mix.
A driveway poured without adequate base depth, drainage grading, and air-entrained mix fails all three ways at the same time: scaling at the top, heaving from below, and random cracking through the panels.
